KJERAG / KJERAGBOLTEN

Kjerag & Kjeragbolten, Norway

The boulder gets the photograph. The mountain earns it. Kjerag rises to 1,084 metres above Lysefjord and is a full, demanding mountain day from Stavanger.

Three climbs. Open granite. A proper mountain day.

The standard hike is around 11 km return with roughly 800 metres of elevation gain. Allow 6–10 hours for the hike itself. From Stavanger, Kjerag is a full-day trip rather than a short excursion.

What the route is actually like

The route starts steep and repeats the work over three ridges. Chains and fixed wires help on the steepest granite sections. In rain, smooth rock becomes much more serious. The plateau is less steep but more exposed to wind and changing weather.

Season and access

Mid-May to September is the normal season, depending on snow and the opening of the mountain road to Øygardstøl. The standard visitor route is not a normal winter hike.

GUIDED BY FIRST RESPONDERS

On Kjerag, judgement matters as much as fitness.

The first-responder background behind NORDIQ matters in practical ways here: pacing the three climbs, reading changing weather, judging slippery granite and making calm turnaround decisions when conditions change.
