PRIVATE JOURNEYS IN FJORD NORWAY

Norway Vacation Packages, Privately Planned from Stavanger

Private journeys in Fjord Norway, from a long weekend to a week or more, shaped around who is travelling, your pace and the season. Planned by a local team in Stavanger, with one person to talk to from the first message to the last day.

A package built around you, not a brochure

Most Norway vacation packages are fixed: the same route, the same dates and the same coach for everyone on board. Ours work the other way round. You tell us who is travelling, when you can come, what you would like to see and how active you want to be. We then put together the route, the stays, the transport, the guides and the boat days, and we stay in touch while you travel.

We are based in Stavanger, and our own team guides the days around the Lysefjord and along the southwest coast. For places further away, such as Hardanger, Trolltunga and Bergen, we plan and manage the days and work with local partners on the ground. We always tell you who delivers each part of your journey, so you never have to wonder who you are travelling with.

If you only need one day, that works too. Our private Preikestolen hike is often where a longer journey starts.

Planned by first responders who love these mountains

John and Gert Olsson, who run NORDIQ Travel, both work as firefighters in Norway, and our guiding network is built around people from the emergency services: fire, police and medical. That is not a promise that nothing can go wrong in the mountains. It is a way of working. We prepare properly, check the forecast and the trail before we go, keep the group together and make the call to change the plan when that is the right thing to do.

We also hike here because we love it, not only because it is our job. That is why we can tell you honestly which hike suits your group, which day to keep free for the weather, and when a quieter alternative is the better choice.

What we can arrange for your journey

A private journey with us can include as much or as little as you need. These are the parts we plan and coordinate most often:

  • Planning: the route and timings, with realistic driving distances, ferry connections, opening hours and the weather in mind.
  • Private transport: hotel pickups, transfers and a driver between stops, so nobody in your group has to navigate mountain roads.
  • Private local guides: fjord and mountain hikes, including sunrise and winter hikes, as well as calmer walks and city days.
  • Places to stay: hotels and distinctive stays chosen for the route, from a historic coastal village to fjord hotels in Hardanger and modern lodges above the Lysefjord. We do not own these places, and we will always say when a stay is our recommendation rather than something we run. See our unique and historic stays.
  • Boat days: private RIB, boat or yacht trips on the Lysefjord and the Hardangerfjord, including Preikestolen seen from the water. More on our fjord and coastal experiences page.
  • Food and local life: restaurant suggestions and reservations, local stops on the way, and days built around foraging, fishing or cycling.
  • Support while you travel: a direct line to us before, during and after the trip. If the weather turns or someone needs a slower day, we adjust the plan with you.

Sample journeys

These are starting points, not fixed products. Each journey is adjusted to your dates, your group and the season, and priced individually once we know what you would like to do.

Stavanger harbour and waterfront at night in Norway

Three days: Stavanger and the Lysefjord

  • Day 1: Old Stavanger, Fargegaten and the harbour.
  • Day 2: the Lysefjord by private boat and a guided Preikestolen hike, or a quieter day on the water.
  • Day 3: Sverd i fjell and the open Jæren coast.

Good for: a first taste of Fjord Norway, a long weekend or a few extra days before or after a cruise.

View of Lysefjord near Kjerag, Norway

Five to six days: Stavanger as your base

  • Preikestolen and the Lysefjord, from the trail and from the water.
  • Flørli 4444 or, in summer, Kjerag.
  • A day on the coast south of Stavanger: Jøssingfjord, Åna-Sira and the old village of Sogndalstrand.
  • A slower day for the fjord, the coast or local food.
  • One spare day kept free for the weather.

Good for: couples and families who want to unpack once and still see a lot.

Sunrise on the Trolltunga trail, Hardanger, Norway

Seven days or more: the southwest and Hardanger

  • Days 1–4: Stavanger base with Preikestolen, the Lysefjord and the coast.
  • Day 5: on to Hardanger, about four to five hours from Stavanger, with a night at a fjord hotel.
  • Day 6: Trolltunga for fit, experienced hikers in summer, a glacier experience at Folgefonna, or a calm day by the fjord.
  • Day 7: onwards to Bergen, or back towards Stavanger.

Good for: a first longer journey through Fjord Norway. The Hardanger days are planned by us and delivered with local partners.

Want something in between, or a longer stay? Tell us how many days you have and we will suggest a route that makes sense for the distances and the time of year.

How we plan your journey

  1. Tell us about the trip. Who is travelling, when you can come, what you are curious about and how active you want to be. A short email is enough to start.
  2. We suggest a route. Days, timings and stays that make sense for the season and the distances, including a spare day where the plan depends on the weather.
  3. We arrange it. Stays, transport, guides and experiences are booked and coordinated, and you know who looks after each part.
  4. We stay with you. You have a direct contact before, during and after the trip. If the weather or your energy changes, we adjust on the day.

When to travel

The season changes what is possible more than anything else in Western Norway. A rough guide:

  • June to August: long days and everything open, including the high mountain roads. It is also the busiest time on the popular trails, so it pays to plan early.
  • Late May and September: a good balance of open roads, quieter trails and mild weather. The Lysevegen road to Kjerag usually opens in late May, depending on the snow.
  • October to April: short days, few visitors and a very different Norway. Fjord cruises from Stavanger run all year, and Preikestolen can be hiked in winter with the right equipment, an early start and preferably a guide. Kjerag and the Lysevegen road are closed. Our guide to Preikestolen in winter explains what to expect.

One honest note: around Stavanger, the chance of seeing the northern lights is close to zero. If they are high on your list, tell us early, because that means looking much further north.

For a closer look at the fjord itself, read how to see the Lysefjord from Stavanger.

Who our journeys suit

  • Couples who want time together in the fjords without spending their holiday on logistics.
  • Families and friends travelling at their own pace, with one vehicle and a plan B for the days when not everyone wants to hike.
  • Small private groups who want a guide of their own rather than a seat on a coach.
  • Travel advisors and agencies looking for a local team to deliver private days and journeys in Western Norway. See our page for travel advisors and DMCs.

You can read about real days with real guests on our guest stories page.

What we will always be clear about

  • Price: every journey is quoted individually, because no two are the same. You see what is included before you decide.
  • Who delivers what: which days our own team guides, which parts are delivered by partners, and which hotels are our recommendations.
  • The weather: mountain days depend on conditions. We may change the order of the days, the route or the activity, and we would rather move a hike than take you up when conditions are not right.
  • What is not possible: some things are seasonal, such as Kjerag in winter. We would rather tell you that early than promise it.

Frequently asked questions

Are these fixed packages with set departure dates?

No. Every journey is private and planned for your dates. The sample journeys above show what is possible, and we adjust them to your group.

How much does a private Norway journey cost?

It depends on the number of days, the stays you choose, the size of your group and how many guided days you want. Send us a short brief and we will come back with a proposal and a clear price.

How many days do we need?

Three days gives you a good first taste of Stavanger and the Lysefjord. Five or six days from a Stavanger base lets you add the bigger hikes and the coast. With seven days or more, you can add Hardanger as well.

Can we combine hiking with relaxed days?

Yes. Most of our journeys mix active days with calmer ones, such as a boat day, a coastal drive or a day built around local food.

Do you only work around Stavanger?

Stavanger and the southwest are our home and where our own team guides. We also plan journeys further into Fjord Norway, such as Hardanger and Bergen, together with local partners.

Can our travel advisor book with you?

Yes. We work with travel advisors and agencies, and they can contact us directly. See our travel advisor page.

What happens if the weather is bad?

We decide together with you, often the day before. That may mean swapping two days, choosing a lower route or moving a hike to a better day. This is why we like to keep one spare day in longer journeys.

John Steinar Olsson, Owner and Sales Manager at NORDIQ Travel

Why travel with NORDIQ Travel?

NORDIQ Travel is a small team based in Stavanger. John and Gert Olsson started guiding here in 2019, under the name TrollAdventure. Both work as firefighters in Norway, and our guiding network is built around people from the emergency services: fire, police and medical. We also hike these mountains because we love it, not only because it is our job.

That shows in how we work: careful preparation, clear communication and calm decisions when conditions change. We plan your days, sort out transport and ferry connections, match you with a local guide and set the pace around the people travelling. You have one person to talk to from your first message to your last day, and we will always tell you honestly what is possible, and what depends on the weather and the season.
